Finally a new painting completed. This has taken me over a period of 3 weeks to do and its been pretty fun (as well as a killer!)

This is my first Uni project, (a summer project meh) which was to create a self portrait. Naturally I chose to paint my self in a fantasy twist, kind of like neo pre Raphaelite style with some neo classicalism influences (even though there not very clear ahah.) the project was to tell a story with our illustrations, a story about who we are as a person.

So rather than doing what I expect most of the other students to do and add really obvious signs like a pencil showing 'I like art...' I wanted to add some real imagination to this piece and get the viewer to really study the image. So I have used my own symbolism.

Katana: To show my love of Eastern cultures especially Japan. It has a massive influence on my work, (the music, the history; old and new even the food.) I love the Eastern way

I also included a sword because of the fact I do Martial Arts (Tae Kwon Do). Often a Katana is associated with Eastern Martial Arts so I thought it would best suit. We don't use weapons within TKD however I wanted to use a sword since it symbolises the ready posture of one of my fav patterns (sequence of movements) called Yoo-Sin, which leads me onto ANOTHER reason why I chose it.

The positioning of the sword has significance!!! I painted it on the left hand side so it could be drawn with the right hand. In Eastern cultures to draw a sword with a right hand is to symbolise the righteous way, which I feel can describe me well as a person. I know to always do the right thing and to follow good morals, which is a quality I think everyone should have.

The Cross: Even though I am not a regular Church goer I do follow Christian morals and it a big part of me. I feel people should treat others how they would want to be treated themselves and that’s what I apply myself. Be kind and respectful and you should get it in return.

The Bird: I have to say this was one of the most fun parts of this painting because this was the first bird I have ever painted!!! So I’m pretty proud of myself

Anyway I feel that bird shows freedom and openness, which is like my personality and ideas. I am very open minded person, and will listen to anyone’s ideas for example, cultures, religions, fashion, music and many more. Also due to my open mindedness I am a very creative person and can seem to come up with a vision very easily, which I feel shows in my artwork. The bird could also show that I am a very carefree and laid back person. Lastly I feel the bird also represents my kind, caring nature.

Colours: because eggshell blue, blood red, black and olive greens are my fav colours ahaha.

Anyway I hope that describes me well and you all enjoy this painting as much as I did painting it
